| Refractive eye surgery is eye surgery that improves the refractive state of the eyes. It's considered a surgical remodeling of the eye, or may also be cataract surgery. One form of refractive eye surgery is lasik surgery. There are several techniques and variations of refractive eye surgery and also several variations of lasik surgery. It is a procedure that involves laser technology. The technology was discovered in the 1970s, and somewhere along the way, discovered lasers could be used for precise forms of surgery... And as more people experimented with the procedure and lasers, so evolved the technology for lasers used for eye surgery. The first recorded laser eye surgery patent in the US, was in 1989. After much testing, the FDA gave its approval to lasik surgery in 1998, which allowed many people to benefit from this form of eye surgery. Actually, there are several different types of refractive or lasik surgery. Lasik is an acronym for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. The main purpose of Lasik surgery is to improve the vision. You would consider refractive surgery on the eyes when you have an eye that is not perfectly shaped, making your eyesight less than 20/20, or the image on the retina is distorted or out of focus. This may be due to myopia, which means you can’t see well into the distance as well as you can see close up. You may opt for Lasik surgery if your eye shape causes you to have Hyperopia, which means you can’t see well close up and you can see in the distance better. Of course, you may suffer from both. The third common reason for having lasik surgery is if your eyes have astigmatism, which causes you to see things in a distorted form, caused by the cornea shape being irregular. Some of the other forms of refractive surgery are RK, where a very sharp knife is used instead of lasers. PRK and Lasik are similar procedures using lasers but in one, lasik, there is a flap and the other PRK, no flap is involved. All of these are considered to be a form of refractive surgery, which really means that the cornea is reshaped in some manner so that the patient has as a result in clear and sharper vision then before the procedure. It is performed as out patient surgery, and one eye may take 30 minutes or less, depending on the degree of correction and of course the patient. There have been many surveys taken asking patients who have had lasik refractive surgery, and generally, these patients respond with 92 to 98 percent satisfaction with the results. This satisfaction means they can see clearer, and objects either in the foreground or in the distance are sharper. Also, in these cases, the patient no longer requires eye glasses or contact corrective lenses as their cornea has been reshaped into a form that allows them to see better. However, lasik surgery does not guarantee 20/20 vision to be restored. But the vision is vastly improved. So, refractive surgery is an option for better sight.
