| Laser marking is the use of laser to mark on a material. Engraving on materials with the use of laser beams is termed as laser marking. The machine used for laser marking is called laser engraving machine. It has 3 parts, the laser, the controller and the surface. Laser is the beam which allows the controller to trace designs onto the surface. The controller controls the direction, intensity , speed and the width of the laser beams which is aimed on an object. There are three different types of laser machines. The most preferred is the X-Y table where is laser beam moves around the stationary object in X and Y axis drawing vectors. In some scenario, the beam is stationary and the object moves. The work surface moves in Y axis and the laser in X axis. the second type of laser machine is for cylindrical objects in which the beam successfully engrave a fine helix and the desired image is formed in the end. In the third method, both the beam and surface are stationary and galva mirrors make the beam over the surface. The beam from the laser optical system and the point of the object should me at the focal plane and should also match with the focal point. This point is basically small and could be less than a fraction of a millimeter. The laser beams are significantly affected on the areas that come under the focal point. The energy produced by the beam affects the surface of the material under the focal point. The surface of the material could result in fracture or in some cases flake off when the material is heated and vaporized by laser beams. Through this process the material from the surface is removed to show an engraving. Vacuum pumps are needed when the material is vaporized and emit toxic fumes when laser beams are emitted onto it. Variety of materials could be engraved through lasers. Woods are one of the examples for natural materials. Hard woods and the soft woods are the two types of wood materials. Hard woods include walnut, oak, mahogany and maple. Soft woods include hard paper , fiberboard , news prints etc .The other materials for laser writing include plastic like acrylic plastic, metals, stone, glass, jewellery, plastics etc. |
