| Many new buyers, when trying to place their first order for promotional apparel, such as t-shirts for clubs, a new business, or for a tradeshow, usually don’t have any idea about the small details behind the screen printing process and how pricing works. What causes the price to fluctuate so much from vendor to vendor has many factors that need to be considered. They usually end up chasing the lowest price and the end result is a product that they are not satisfied with. In this article I will try to cover some basic tips that any buyer can learn from and educate themselves with basic terminology so that they can ask the proper questions to their supplier and in return hopefully get a quality garment. When calling your supplier for a price quotation for a basic T-shirt, always remember to mention the T-shirt color you are interested in. Whites are always cheaper then colored T-shirts. Many times when the customer asks for a quotation, but does not specify the color of the garment, many suppliers will play it safe and give quotation based on color shirt. When the actual order comes in for White T-shirts the customer will usually not get the discount that they deserve. Also remember to ask what quality shirt you will be getting. If one supplier is quoting you based on a 6.1 oz T-shirt another competitor is beating his price, but not mentioning that he may be selling you a lighter weight shirt, such as 5.4 oz or less, then you are not getting a fair price comparison. The price difference between the two quality T-shirst is usually about $0.50 – $0.75. If price is not a very big factor, then always insist on a ring spun T-shirt. Ring spun shirts feel very soft and comfortable and are usually worth the price difference, especially if you intend to wear the shirt for a long time. They usually cost about $1.00 - $1.50 more then a regular open end T-shirt. There are many different types of inks that a screen printer can offer to you depending on your special request. The most basic standard ink type is plastasol ink, which has great wash ability and can usually outlast the life of the T-shirt itself. But for those conditions to be true, the screen printer must not cut corners. The ink must be cured at 330 degrees before the garment is ready to be shipped out. Some suppliers, in order to rush jobs, will speed up the dryer and not pay attention to the curing temperature. Those shirts will usually start to form cracks in the ink after only a few washes. To protect yourself from such problems, always check a few shirts at random from your order to make sure that the shirts were cured properly. The easiest way to check is to stretch the printed are of the shirt and see if you notice any cracks in the ink. If you do, then ask the supplier to run the shirts through the dryer again and that should solve the problem. Some times a customer does not like the feel of the ink on their shirts. This is usually true with female garments. When they receive their order, they are dissapoined with the texture and feel of the ink. If you desire a smooth touch when you feel the printed area, then request water based inks. Water based inks have a smooth hand feel where ink becomes a part of the T-shirt. Most suppliers will ask for a little more money to do water based inks because the printing process is more demanding. |
